Arrive at least 2 to 3 hours early before departure time and know the carry-on luggage rules
- Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.
- Thunderstorms? Check with your airline for flight info before you leave for the airport.
- Do not attempt to bring a firearm or ammunition through a TSA checkpoint. Doing so slows the screening lines and compromises the safety and security of other passengers and the officers in the checkpoint. If you are unsure about how to properly transport a firearm, read TSA’s transporting firearms and ammunition rules.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Guidelines for Travelers
Be prepared for your next flight. Learn about the checkpoint security screening process and policies.
- Get answers to frequently asked questions about security screening.
- Learn what items can be packed in your carry-on or checked baggage.
- Know the carry-on luggage rules – avoid unnecessary delays at security checkpoints.
Sign up for TSA Pre-check or Global Entry
- TSA PreCheck® program expedites traveler screening through participating TSA security checkpoints. No need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, or light jackets.
- Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States by accessing the Global Entry processing technology. Pre-approved and pre-screened travelers have access to expedited clearance lanes that eliminate the need for paperwork. Additionally, these travelers can skip automated kiosks when using the Global Entry app upon arrival. Both technologies are in use at Dulles and can reduce wait times.
