The Toyota Camry continues to serve as an efficient family sedan. It can also be viewed as a fuel-sipping miser with the ability to tackle harsh winter driving conditions, all while retaining a healthy portion of its original value. Oh, and it also happens to be one of the most reliable cars on the planet. Thanks to its long history, finding a Camry with the right price and mileage should be easy. Toyota Camry (9th Generation: 2025 - Current)
Key Improvements: The 2025 Camry builds off the previous generation, touting similar proportions but with a more aggressive front end. The big news here is the adoption of the 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain across all trims, meaning the old V6 is no longer an option. Even bigger news is that the hybrid powertrain is now standard on all-wheel drive (AWD) models; this is the first time you can get a hybrid AWD Camry. Front drive models produce 225 horsepower, while AWD bumps output to 232, significantly less than the old V6's 301 horsepower. Expect fuel economy approaching 51 mpg combined. The cabin gets a complete makeover, including better soundproofing, while base models gain a digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen. Higher trims like the XLE and XSE get a larger digital cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assist suite is updated to include a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic detection. New standard equipment includes proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and rear seat air vents. Digital key, which lets you use your phone to unlock and start the car, is a new option, as is the panoramic glass moonroof on hybrid models.
Toyota Camry (8th Generation: 2018 - 2024)
Key Improvements: The eighth-generation Camry bans boring, with aggressive new styling unlike anything we've seen on a Camry. Longer, lower, and wider than the previous model, the eighth-generation Camry is a better driver’s car, with more powerful engines that see a significant improvement in fuel economy, up to 32 mpg combined with the 4-cylinder and 26 mpg combined with the V6. Toyota Safety Sense comes standard and includes previously optional features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, land-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. The infotainment systems are also better, although Apple CarPlay and Android Auto don’t join the system until 2018 and 2019, respectively. An optional upgraded adaptive cruise control system can operate in stop-and-go traffic.
Model Updates: The 2019 Camry gains Apple CarPlay; Android Auto doesn’t show up until 2020, also the final year for a CD player. 2021 brings new 7- and 9-inch touchscreens atop the dash and a revised Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ with left-turn intersection assist. For 2022, dual-zone automatic climate control comes standard.
Toyota Camry (7th Generation: 2012 - 2017)
Key Improvements: The seventh-generation Camry is a slightly sportier version of the sixth-generation car, with the same dimensions and engine choices. The biggest difference is the addition of an advanced driver-assist system (which comes later in the model run) and the loss of the optional manual transmission. Toyota’s Entune infotainment system shows up, but only on upper-level trims. 4-cylinder models get around 28 mpg combined, while the V6 pulls a 25 mpg combined figure. Hybrid models promise 40 mpg combined.
Model Updates: For 2013, the optional blind-spot monitor now has rear cross-traffic detection, and a touchscreen infotainment system is available on the entry-level trims.
Toyota Camry (6th Generation: 2007 - 2011)
The sixth-generation Camry returns to a more streamlined look, although it offers more interior legroom than the previous model. This Camry is a better fit for families than its predecessors, being larger all around and with more powerful engines. A hybrid model joins the Camry clan, promising 34 mpg combined fuel economy.
Toyota Camry (5th Generation: 2002 - 2006)
Toyota wanted the fifth-generation Camry to say "WOW," but critics thought “MOM” might be a better word choice. Taller and wider than the fourth-generation car, the Camry gets slightly more power from its 4-cylinder and V6 engines and a few more standard features. The two-door Camry Solara coupe received a similar treatment.
Toyota Camry (4th Generation: 1997 - 2001)
As handsome as its competition, the fourth-generation Camry grew longer, giving it more interior room. The 4-cylinder and V6 carry over from the third generation, but sadly, the coupe and wagon do not. Sales for this generation propelled the Camry to win the title of top-selling car in the US.
Toyota Camry (3rd Generation: 1992 - 1996)
This generation cemented the Camry's place as a solid, near bullet-proof family sedan in consumers' minds. A sporty coupe joins a revised wagon featuring a unique dual rear wiper system.
Toyota Camry (2nd Generation: 1987 - 1991)
The second-generation Camry reaches a point where it can directly challenge the Honda Accord. During this run, a wagon joins the Camry fleet, as does an advanced all-wheel-drive system called All-Trac. The diesel engine is dropped and replaced by a potent gasoline V6.
Toyota Camry (1st Generation: 1983 - 1986)
Looking very little like the other generations, the first Camry arrived in dealerships as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. Designed for American taste, the Camry has velour seats, upscale audio systems, and lots of cool features. Three 4-cylinder engines are available: two gas-powered and one diesel.
