Molly Mae's 'excruciating' health battle that left her 'fearing for her life' (2024)

Molly Mae Hague is best known for her appearance on Love Island which saw her rise to fame back in 2019 with her now fiancé Tommy Fury who she met on the reality dating show.

The 24-year-old is arguably one of the most successful contestants to ever come out of the Love Island villa having launched her own fake tan business and previously landing the role of creative director at Pretty Little Thing back in 2021.

The YouTuber, who boasts 1.84m subscribers, likes to keep her fans up to date with her life and has been very open about her health struggles since being diagnosed with an excruciating disease that left her 'fearing for her life'.

Molly was diagnosed with endometriosis back in 2021 which she said left her with period pains which were "on the same level as labour."

The NHS website states that endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Endometriosis is a long-term condition which there is currently no cure for but treatment can be used to ease the symptoms.

The main symptoms of the disease are pelvic pain, intense period pain that interferes with your daily life, pain during or after sex and difficulty getting pregnant.

The 24-year-old has been very open about her health with fans praising her for raising awareness about the disease.

Speaking about her condition in a YouTube video, the mum-of-one admitted: "From the age of 15 I knew something was really, really not right."

Molly continued: "I cannot explain the levels of pains I've experienced in recent years through my period.

"I've nearly called an ambulance on multiple occasions because of the level of pain I was in.

"I was fearful for my life. I'd ask myself: 'If I'm in this much agonising pain, what is happening in my body?'

"I'd wonder if I was going to see the next morning because the pain would always happen in the night. It was horrendous."

On top of that, the former Pretty Little Thing creative director explained that she has agonising periods and that she finds sex "excruciating."

The star has always been open with fans about her sex life with Tommy Fury, admitting that it was pretty much 'non-existent' due to the level of pain she was in.

Molly explained that she had first gone to the doctor about the pain when she was just 17-years-old but it took her five trips to the doctor to finally be diagnosed.

The social media influencer underwent invasive surgery at the end of 2021 to try and relieve some of her pain.

However, she was left teary eyed just months later when she told her followers that her operation hadn't worked as well as she had hoped and was still in agony.

Molly told viewers in a YouTube video: “I literally feel so rubbish today. And the fact that I know my operation hasn’t worked.

“It’s just so sad. When I come on my period, that is the day for me where it’s not like any other day, I don’t suffer too badly.

“It’s the day after I come on, the pain is unbearable. Don’t get me wrong, the pain is better than it used to be since I had the operation.

“But it’s another one of the days I have to somehow make it through the day whilst being in so much pain, and be in meetings and stuff, and not show that I’m literally in pain to the point of where I just want to curl up in a ball and just cry.”

Molly admitted that having sex is still a painful experience for her and that she continues to have sore periods that require a tampon change every 30 minutes.

Speaking after the operation, she said: "In regards to the painful sex, that unfortunately never changed, it is something that is an ongoing issue.

"I had a blood test and MRI scan because I am going to see a specialist in London in regards to that situation."

Praising Tommy for his support, she added: "I couldn’t ask for a better boyfriend in regards to my endo journey. He has been so understanding and so caring."

The former Love Island star has also had several other health scares in recent years after she had a lump from her breast removed and one in her finger in the same day.

Although she was previously reassured by medics that the lump was not of any harm, she chose to have it surgically removed after noticing that it had grown.

Back in 2020, Molly also had a cancerous mole on her leg removed after she learned she had malignant melanoma.

She admitted that it was her mum that had noticed it while she was on Love Island but she had been to the doctors about it three times before she discovered it was skin cancer.

The 24-year-old urged her fans to check their own bodies for moles as she said: "Don't ever think it'll be someone else's story.

"You know when you see things on Instagram or on the news where you think, 'That's just someone else's story it could never happen to me'. Guess what, it happened to me."
